Next item up on the two day diet…

This one’s about a doomed species, and I wonder who they can be?

EXTINCTIA SpeciesTheme Park

Mummy, whatever can those be?  They’re birds, dear, and they flew;

drifting and diving happily against the white and blue.

What happened to them? Tell me why they had to disappear.

The fish they fed on seemed to die in millions every year,

the parks which let them breed and nest were slowly just abolished

and the places where they’d need to rest were flooded and demolished.

All species, darling, have to obey the demands of evolution

or they will simply die away for lack of a solution.

What’s that fierce and furry creature?  Oh, Honey, that’s a cat;

You really ought to ask your teacher to tell you things like that.

They’d chase and kill some gentler beast and then sit down and eat;

that was the theory then, at least, until their chosen meat

all died away themselves, you see; that lion so distinguished

couldn’t cope with liberty when his food chain was extinguished.

All species, darling, have to obey the demands of evolution

or they will simply die away for lack of a solution.

Mummy, just behind this glass there’s some two-legged thing;

It’s a human, darling; we’ll just pass, we can’t see everything.

They’re not too pretty, are they now, all smooth skin and no hair;

they never seemed to realise how they poisoned their own air.

The floods and storms all wiped them out; they were simply washed away.

They forgot what nature’s all about and they finally had their day.

All species, darling, have to obey the demands of evolution

or they will simply die away for lack of a solution.

What species, Mummy, am I then, what kind of thing am I?

Oh, Honey, must I really say again? You simply ought to try

to remember why you’re called that name, your now long past relations,

the million millions who gradually came to form our many nations.

Some were spiders, some were bees, cockroaches, locusts, flies,

at home in water, plants and trees; no species ever dies.

All species, darling, have to obey the demands of evolution

or they will simply die away for lack of a solution.
